Cyprus is famous for its rich history. If you are keen on history, you will enjoy visiting its numerous sights, Roughly 12,000 years ago; a number of intrepid Neolithic settlers arrived on the island and officially began the history of Cyprus.

Cyprus is also known as the birthplace of some of the ancient Gods; Aphrodite (daughter of Zeus) is usually said to have been born near her chief centre of worship, Paphos, on the island of Cyprus, which is why she is sometimes called "Cyprian". Since then Cyprus has become home to many civilisations. The Saint Hilarion Castle lies on the Kyrenia mountain range, in North Cyprus and inspired Walt Disney to use it as a design for the castle in Snow White,  Walt Disney's 'Sleeping Beauty.

In 1974, following a coup sponsored by the Greek military junta of 1967-1974 and executed by the Cypriot National Guard was overturned by Turkey and the Turkish Cypriots were saved from possible genocide (a similar scenario was lived at Crete Island in 1878). Since then Cyprus has been divided, de facto, into the Greek Cypriot-controlled southern two-thirds of the island and the Turkish-occupied northern third. The North proclaimed its independence in 1975. In 1983, the Turkish Cypriots declared an independent "Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus" TRNC.
